About Us

playbus Milfields Hackney Playbus is a mobile play project that was set up in 1972 with the aim of taking exciting and stimulating play opportunities onto housing estates in Hackney where so many children were growing up. We run our service from a brightly painted double decker bus, fully converted for early years play. Hackney Playbus was set up and initially funded by the local authority enabling the project to buy and convert our first double decker bus and employ  staff.

In 1998 we became a registered charity, and the project went on to attract substantial Sure Start funding to take our service out into the community in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, reaching around 5,000 children a year. When the Government centralised early years delivery into  children’s Centres,  Hackney Playbus found a new role in outreach working in partnership with the new Centres. In 2012 we worked with 7 different Children’s Centres.

In 2012 we celebrated our 40th year and we now offer a range of services to our community in and around East London. Our fun packed bus is a regular sight in parks and on estates offering fun, freely chosen, creative and safe play opportunities to young children, through which they can develop confidence and skills that will lay the foundation for learning. We hold regular weekly sessions as well as one off fun days or parties. Our bus is well equipped for exploratory and creative play. There is a sand pit for digging and tables for play dough or games. We have an art area where children can enjoy drawing, gluing, printing and crafts like model and mask making.  Upstairs, our bus is carpeted with a home corner suitable for role play, dressing up or doing puzzles, a baby area and a wide range of toys and books. In dry weather we offer outdoor activities including a trampoline, a water canal system, bikes and hoops.

We have also developed outreach programs in partnership with Children’s Centres. By talking to people door to door in selected areas we have helped make sure that no one in the community is left out of the support services available to families with young children.

If you would like more information about our active outreach programs please get in touch.
